چکیده

In the wonderful frame of Cape Town, neuroscientists from all over the world met to discuss the role of metals in brain function. The day was opened by a very intriguing plenary lecture from James Connor (Penn State University). The topic of this comprehensive talk was the role of iron dyshomeostasis in neurological diseases. Dr. Connor illustrated how iron unbalance could be linked to a variety of neurological conditions. Specifically, he discussed links of iron dyshomeostasis to Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and Hallorvorden-Spatz disease. All these conditions are associated with iron imbalance in terms of too much iron or limitations in iron storage capacity. Intriguing new data from cell culture models were presented showing how iron can enhance oxidative stress and inflammatory responses in microglia. He also described how a mutation in the HFE gene, commonly associated with hereditary hemochromatosis and iron overload disorders, is more prevalent in AD and ALS patients. Additionally, experimental evidence on the biological consequence of carrying the HFE mutation was presented. In the final part of the lecture, Dr. Connor also described how iron deficiency could, as well, lead to neurological diseases and discussed how iron deficiency during development can be associated with a myelin deficit that promotes a long lasting cognitive and motor impairment.

Performance of Membrane Bioreactor in Removal of Heavy Metals from Industrial Wastewater

Membrane technology is one of the few non-pollutant choices when selecting a treatment process. A membrane with suitable pore size can remove almost all pollutants without using any chemicals. In this research, chromium, zinc and lead were removed from synthetic wastewater by a membrane bioreactor. The results showed that by using a membrane bioreactor, the COD removal efficiency was increased ...

Health risk assessment of selected heavy metals in some edible fishes from Gorgan Bay, Iran

The objective of this study was to assess the bioaccumulation of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cr and Fe) in the muscles of five fish species (Sander lucioperca, Liza auratus, Alosa caspia, Cyprinus carpio and Liza saliens) from Gorgan Bay in the south-eastern Caspian Sea, in order to determine the value daily intake of heavy metals by consumption of fish and human health risk assessment. The concentra...

Assessment of Heavy Metals Pollution in Water and Sediments of Djendjen River, North Eastern Algeria

Water and sediment samples have been collected from five different stations, located along Djendjen River between February and June, 2016 so that the concentrations of Cd, Ni, Zn, and Cu could be determined. The extent of the sediment pollution has been assessed, using the multiple pollution indices, namely Contamination Factor (CF), Pollution Load Index (PLI), and the geoaccumulation index (Ig...

The present study deals with sequential extraction of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) bound trace metals in an industrial area of Firozabad, India. During the study period, daily PM2.5 concentration ranged between 73.49 μg/m3 and 113.26 μg/m3 with poor air quality index of 196.37. In the present study, Ca recorded the highest while Co had the lowest concentration among all analysed metals. Mn, ...
